Nuestro interés es caracterizar la respuesta celular a los antioxidantes: mientras que en las células normales ejercen protección, en las células tumorales pueden llevar a la muerte a través de las especies reactivas de oxígeno. De manera particular empleamos antioxidantes dietarios en estudios in vivo e in vitro para indagar sobre la bioenergética, la autofagia y la homeostasis mitocondrial (biogénesis, dinámica y degradación). Ya que el riñón es uno de los tejidos más susceptibles al estrés oxidante, estudiamos principalmente modelos de daño renal agudo y crónico. También realizamos estudios de investigación clínica sobre posibles alteraciones y blancos terapéuticos de la defensa antioxidante en pacientes con patologías asociadas a estrés oxidante.
